Marriage license controversy in Colorado continues to rattle county after court order

COLORADO — A federal judge on Monday refused to issue a marriage license to a Colorado woman who was arrested last month for allegedly using her boyfriend’s driver’s license to illegally get married.

The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office said it was disappointed in the judge’s decision.

The office did not immediately return a call seeking comment from Reuters.

The case stems from a July 2015 arrest of 24-year-old Jennifer Stoner by Boulder County Sheriff’s Department officers.

Police said Stoner was driving a vehicle with the registration of a woman who had a valid Colorado marriage license, but who had not legally married.

Authorities arrested Stoner on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and obstruction of an officer after a traffic stop in Boulder.

She was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries, police said.

Stoner was released on bail but faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
