What the courts have said about interracial marriages

The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a lower court order banning interracial marriage, ruling the law violated the constitutional guarantee of equal protection under the law.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice R.S. Thakur said the Supreme Court did not have jurisdiction to review a lower-court order issued on March 9, 2017, that banned interracial weddings.

The bench said the constitutionality of the ban was not contested.

The law has since been extended to other states.
