Fox Sports has the story of how interfaith couples in Arizona are being treated by state and local authorities, after they were denied marriage licenses to each other by the state in June.
In a letter to the Arizona Attorney General, the American Civil Liberties Union said the two families had not been able to obtain the documents required to marry under state law.
The ACLU is representing the couples in a lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Arizona.
The lawsuit says Arizona is denying the couples their rights under the U.S. Constitution.
The ACLU of Northern Arizona is also representing the plaintiffs.
The couple, both in their early 20s, have been together for six years, and are the biological children of their parents.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a group of couples that included the ACLU, the Arizona Family Council, the National Alliance of Evangelicals, the Phoenix chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and other organizations.
The case centers on two Arizona couples, David and Joanna Pemberton, and their three children.
They are the sons of former Arizona Gov.
Janet Napolitano, who served as a Republican candidate for governor in 2015.
The family is part of a coalition of more than 300 people that filed a lawsuit in May challenging the denial of marriage licenses for interreligious couples.
The plaintiffs argued that they have lived together for more than a decade and that the state’s denial was unconstitutional.
The state’s attorney general declined to comment, but told the Arizona Republic that the lawsuit is “a political action and has no merit.”
The Pembertons say they are grateful to the ACLU and the Arizona Federation of Republican Women for their help.
“We were trying to be supportive of them and they were kind enough to come forward and help us out,” Joanna said.
“I am very thankful and I am glad that this case is being brought to light,” said Joanna.
The Pendertons have a 2-year-old son, Daniel, and a 1-year of other children.
“He is my best friend,” Joana said.
“If I get married I am going to be his best friend.”
