When the “marriage license” is a tool, it is a source of great pain and frustration.
It is a barrier to marriage, and the rights of those who are married are at risk.
In a new report, Marriage Aid, the Equality Campaign and Marriage Equality WA say the “license” is “inherently discriminatory” and “a fundamental infringement on marriage” for couples who have to apply for the document to marry.

It says: “It is the intention of the Parliament that all persons lawfully married to each other, including the minor children of such marriages, should be entitled to a marriage license, to be used to obtain and to issue a marriage certificate.”

In April, it released an updated version of the Marriage Act which includes a provision that “marriage certificates may be renewed or amended at any time”.

Ms Scott said the bill was a “huge step forward” and had “been an absolutely brilliant opportunity for community engagement”.
She said she was “excited” the Minister had taken it upon himself to ensure the legislation was not “used to discriminate against people in marriage”.
The Equality Campaign has written to the Minister to say it will “continue to call for changes to the Marriage laws” in the wake of the report.
