Wife of former Tennessee lawmaker dies after being shot to death

A Tennessee woman whose husband was fatally shot in 2014 was found dead Sunday morning in her home, her family said.

The couple had been married for a year, according to a statement from the family.

The death is under investigation, according a statement released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

“It is with deep sadness that we must report the tragic loss of our wonderful, beautiful, and loving wife, Kim Carter, who passed away this morning,” the family said in a statement.

The woman, identified as Kim Carter by the family, was the widow of former Rep. John Carter, D-Tenn., a longtime GOP leader.

A man was arrested for the shooting, but no charges have been filed.

“Kim Carter was a beautiful woman and devoted husband who will be greatly missed by her family and friends,” the statement said.

She was an avid writer and editor who served as chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, according her bio on the Congressional website.

Her husband, John Carter was elected to Congress in 2006 and served as the Tennessee Republican Party chairman in 2014.

He was a longtime opponent of same-sex marriage and served on the committee that oversees the state’s medical marijuana program.

“The family would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this difficult time, and we will be providing updates as they become available,” the Carter family said Sunday night.

The Tennessean first reported the woman’s death Sunday.

The family said they do not know the man’s identity.
